The Department of Internal Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, and Shared Health Manitoba invite applications for the position of Head of the Section of General Internal Medicine, one of 18 sections in the Department of Internal Medicine providing patient care, undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education and research. The successful applicant, will also have a leading role in the health care delivery system of General Internal Medicine services in Winnipeg and Manitoba.

The 73 faculty members form a section that oversees the major in-patient and out-patient clinical care services at the three teaching hospitals in Winnipeg. Section physicians provide clinical attending services on 6 Clinical Teaching Units, multiple non-teaching units, in-patient Consult Services, ED screening coverage and numerous ambulatory care clinics at Winnipeg’s tertiary care centres and acute care hospitals. The section includes a large research database which holds extensive information on over 300,000 consecutive admissions to the General Internal Medicine and Critical Care units. The database is supported by data collection nurses, an industrial engineer, a database manager and a dedicated statistician.

The successful applicant will report to the Department Head of Internal Medicine and Provincial Specialty Lead – Internal Medicine, Shared Health. The successful applicant will be an academic internist with proven leadership abilities, a demonstrated capacity to collaborate with related disciplines, and demonstrated clinical excellence. They must also have clinical and teaching skills to further the aims of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in general internal medicine. A proven record of research is an asset. The incumbent will be expected to promote and expand the evolving ward based research program being developed on the GIM wards and work collaboratively with the research teams embedded in this program.

This is a full-time, contingent position, with a start date negotiable based on the successful candidate’s availability, for a term of 5 years, renewable upon favourable review. Salary and rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. Proposals for job sharing between two qualified applicants will be considered.

Candidates must have senior specialty qualifications in General Internal Medicine in the country of current practice and must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. Certification in General Internal Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is preferred.
