Details:

Shared Health is seeking motivated individuals to fill the role of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Attending, also known as an Emergency Medical Officer (EMO), for Children’s Hospital.

Expectations of a PEM attending physician include:

• Assuming shared or primary responsibility for all patients in the Children’s Hospital Emergency Department (CHED), including all levels of acuity and full resuscitations as medical and trauma team leader with subspecialty support
• A clinical faculty appointment to provide oversight, support, and teaching to learners rotating through CHED, including PEM subspecialty residents; pediatric, emergency medicine, family medicine, and other off-service residents; medical and physician assistant students; and advanced care paramedics
• Acting as a resource for pediatricians independently caring for lower acuity patients in CHED
• Participation in at least one off-shift role contributing to the function of the Section of PEM
• Completion of residency training in Pediatrics or Emergency Medicine with subsequent completion of a PEM subspecialty training program (see below)

The HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pediatric care, including general pediatrics and all pediatric subspecialties. As the only children’s hospital in Manitoba, the centre provides care for pediatric patients from throughout Manitoba, northwestern Ontario, and the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. Our dedicated Children’s Emergency Department has 30 (planned 34) treatment spaces and sees approximately 50,000 children and adolescents annually, with patients arriving from both local and remote areas as well as by referral from other regional sites.

Strengths of our CHED include:

• Collaborative working relationships with a strong nursing and support staff, including clinical resource nurses, nurse educators, social workers, child life therapists, and psychiatric emergency nurse specialists.
• A well-functioning 150-bed children’s hospital and NICU with collegial faculty physicians from all pediatric medical and almost all surgical subspecialties. The pediatric program includes an overnight hospitalist for Code Blue and acute ward coverage and a 21-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
• Upcoming large-scale renovation scheduled to expand the number of treatment spaces, ensure safety, improve flow, and enhance patient and family experience.
• Generous support by the Children’s Hospital Foundation with contributions towards stand-alone projects such as a new ultrasound machine as well as the larger renovation
• Valuable input from our CHED Patient and Family Advisory Council, led by two PEM physicians.
• Wide all-encompassing patient population with geographic, socioeconomic, and ethnic diversity
• Provincial leadership and development in over 40 evidence-based physician and nurse-initiated guidelines
• A fully accredited PEM subspecialty training program with dynamic leadership and capacity for two fellows per post-graduate training year
• A strong clinical research program and active involvement with the Pediatric Emergency Research Canada group, with the opportunity to develop a leading research career supported by the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba.

The Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine currently consists of 28 PEM attending faculty physicians as well as 14 rotating PEM physicians and pediatricians with an interest in acute care who see mid- and lower-acuity patients. Physicians cover eight CHED shifts per day with 64 hours of regular coverage and built-in shift overlap, as well as up to 16 hours of additional physician hours as needed during evenings and overnights plus available funding for voluntary surge hours. Regular physicians are asked for a commitment to a fixed number of shifts per month; there is no defined FTE equivalent. New physicians are provided with both peer and leader mentorship.

A robust academic fund supports off-shift activities such as stipends for teaching, administrative activities and support, faculty retreats, and nine academic lead roles, including Simulation, POCUS, Quality Improvement, Research, Advocacy, Education, and EDI. Physicians participate in regular section meetings and journal clubs, as well as social events with the entire CHED team to foster a sense of community. Section members develop, teach, and participate in quarterly Acute Care Skills Days, ultrasound and suturing workshops, a high-fidelity pediatric trauma course (TRIK), province-wide monthly CME rounds through TREKK, and national monthly virtual PEM CME rounds. The section is represented on both the Pediatrics and the Pediatric Emergency Medicine specialty committees at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPSC).

Requirements:

• Certification in Pediatric Emergency Medicine (RCPSC or equivalent)
• Certification in one of the following may be considered:

Emergency Medicine (RCPSC or equivalent) Candidates without formal PEM or EM training but with extensive experience working in PEM

• Current certification in BLS and PALS
• Eligibility for specialty registration and licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Manitoba

Compensation:

Clinical remuneration occurs via an alternate bloc funding arrangement and is paid at a generous hourly rate with shift differentials for evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. No fee-for-service billing, shadow or otherwise, is required or allowed. New physicians will receive a $15,000 recruitment bonus to help with relocation and other expenses.

The physician will be considered an independent contractor and thus responsible for all professional and medical liability, income tax liability, and any other liability or business expenses arising from professional work associated with this role. Benefits such as life and disability insurance, dental coverage, supplementary health coverage, CME allowance, vacation pay, and pension are not provided for contractor positions, nor is income tithed. Applicants may express interest in a Geographic Full-Time faculty position which includes benefits and a tithe, but such availability is not guaranteed. Of note, the provincial physician association provides all physicians with discounted medical and insurance benefits, funding for parental leaves, retention bonuses, and partial or full reimbursement for CME (up to $5000/year) and annual licensing and malpractice insurance fees (www.doctorsmanitoba.ca).
