Assistant/Associate/Full Professor – Maternal-Fetal Medicine – Sinai Health System

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, along with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sinai Health, are seeking a full-time physician with subspecialty training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) with a focus in Maternal and Fetal Hematologic Disorders of Pregnancy. The successful candidate will be resourced to hold an academic position description of Clinician Investigator and must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the minimum rank of assistant professor at the University of Toronto. Applications from individuals at the higher ranks of associate professor or professor are welcome. The anticipated start date in spring 2024 will be at a mutually agreeable date.

Sinai Health is a leader in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Neonatology, with one of the largest programs and services in Canada. It is a fully affiliated teaching hospital with the University of Toronto and is associated with the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, an institute of international recognition in which research in women’s and infants’ health forms a major component. The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Sinai Health provides care for the full range of Medical Disorders of Pregnancy, including obesity medicine, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, rheumatology, cardiology, and hematology. Other areas of note include our programs in Fetal Diagnosis & Therapy, Prenatal Diagnosis, Placental Disorders, Complex Obstetric Surgery, and the Prevention of Prematurity. The Division services a metropolitan population of more than 6.5 million people. The Division actively collaborates with pediatric subspecialists at The Hospital for Sick Children via the newly established Ontario Fetal Centre. The Division has formal affiliations providing MFM services at Trillium Health Partners and Scarborough Health Network.

The successful candidate will pursue clinical and scholarly excellence in Obstetrical Hematology creating a novel and flagship program with the dual of goal of providing evidence-based expert clinical management and innovative study of hematological disorders for both the mother and fetus. The candidate will work collaboratively with maternal fetal medicine providers, fetal therapists, pediatric and adult hematologists, obstetrical nursing, basic and clinical scientists to elevate our understanding and management of such hematological disorders as maternal immune disorders, hemoglobinopathies, thromboembolism, myeloproliferative disorders, malignancies, hemorrhage and in utero fetal diagnoses including hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn and fetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, fetal hemoglobinopathy and acute hemorrhage/anemia. This role and program permits a comprehensive approach to the care and study of hematology in pregnancy, recognizing a subspecialty that impacts both the fetus and mother.

The successful candidate will provide a consultation and ongoing care practice focused on obstetrical care and management of maternal hematologic disorders in pregnancy through the Medical Disorders of Pregnancy Program Hematology & Pregnancy Program. In addition, the candidate will provide clinical consultation and care focused on fetal hematologic disorders through a dedicated Fetal Hematology Clinic within the Fetal Medicine Unit/Ontario Fetal Centre and will have the requisite clinical knowledge and skills to provide ultrasound assessment of the fetus and to perform an invasive fetal blood sampling +/- transfusion as indicated. Required credentials for the clinical component of this position include completion of an accredited Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship and additional fellowship training in both Fetal Therapy and Maternal-Fetal Hematology.

The Division seeks to appoint an individual with established and proven investigative skills as this position requires engagement in research related Hematologic Disorders in Pregnancy for both the fetus and the pregnant individual. It is a requirement that the successful candidate hold a graduate degree (preferably a PhD) in the field of Hematology, have a strong, focused publication track record and an active research portfolio in the areas of fetal and maternal hematology with active grant funding and a history of successful grant procurement.

The candidate will provide Labor and Delivery coverage in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Obstetric Ultrasound reporting within the Joint Division of Medical Imaging. Enthusiastic participation in all levels of our teaching and education mandate is expected and there will be teaching duties for learners in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education. The successful candidate will promote and demonstrate excellence in professional practices and conduct.

The successful candidate will join a team of MFM doctors, within the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Associates. The candidate will be working at Mount Sinai Hospital (Sinai Health Systems) located at 600 University Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5G 1X5; affiliated offices are located at 700 University Avenue, Toronto, ON , M5G 1X6.

Candidates must either be licensed or be eligible for an independent or restricted academic license, under the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Qualified applicants must either be board-certified (or eligible for certification) in the sub-specialty of MFM by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or have achieved an equivalent level of regulated sub-specialty training in MFM, in addition to the MD degree. The candidate must be able to function proficiently in English.

A minimum gross annual compensation of approximately $250,000.00 (estimated based on fee-for-service billings) is anticipated. Applications will be accepted until March 20, 2024 or until the position is filled.
