The Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at SickKids Hospital is internationally recognised for its contributions to advancing clinical care, education and research in the field of pediatric anesthesiology. We are inviting applications for the position of Division Head of Cardiac Anesthesia. This position is expected to start October – December of 2022.

Responsibilities of the Division Head include ensuring provision of the highest quality pediatric cardiac anesthesia services within a collaborative team including pediatric subspecialized surgeons, intensivists and allied health professionals. The Division Head should promote the individual research interests of faculty as well take initiative to drive a collective endeavour such as prospective outcomes research. Ensuring top quality education for clinical fellows, residents and medical students is essential. The successful candidate will be expected to continue to build upon a culture of quality and safety. We are seeking an individual whose leadership qualifications include a long-term vision for the Division, management proficiency, communications expertise, mentoring capabilities, the ability to engender trust, act collaboratively, and integrate Division activities with the mission of the SickKids Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, Perioperative Services, and the Labatt Family Heart Centre.
Dedicated exclusively to children and their families, SickKids Hospital is a world-renowned state of the art pediatric health care facility affiliated with the University of Toronto, performing over 22,000 procedures on children annually. This includes the daily operation of two pediatric cardiac operating rooms and two pediatric cardiac catherization facilities, with intermittent involvement in adult congenital cardiac surgery at the adjacent University Hospital and pediatric cardiac patients for non-cardiac surgery. The hospital is committed to ongoing excellence in clinical care, research, learning and development, quality, and safety, in addition to ensuring a caring and supportive work environment. The Division of Cardiac Anesthesia is comprised of 9 cardiac anesthesiologists who provide care for neonates and children with congenital and acquired heart disease.

Candidates must hold an M.D. and have experience in paediatric anesthesia and pediatric cardiac anesthesia experience (previous fellowship or extensive practical experience). Demonstrated academic excellence in basic or clinical research, education, quality and safety, or other academic pursuits is required. The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate/Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The candidate must also meet the criteria for appointment to the title of Clinician-Scientist/Investigator/Educator/Teacher/Administrator as described by the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine and be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Candidates must be able to function proficiently in English, and obtain an appropriate visa, if applicable.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with multi-disciplinary, clinical and basic science facilities that are available on the Hospital campus, including the 21-storey Research Institute, and the University of Toronto’s Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.

Remuneration will be competitive with other academic pediatric anesthesia positions in Canada, with a salary range of $265,000-$416,000 per year to which will be added an equal distribution of billing overages. This position has the potential duration of two terms of five years each.
