Northern Health Authority is seeking a pediatrician to join a General Pediatrics Practice in Terrace serving a large segment of Northwest British Columbia, a teaching site for UBC Medicine, and with significant primary care capacity, outstanding specialist support and services, and new hospital being developed. Your home and workplace are surrounded by the stunning coastal mountain range, Skeena River eco-system, lush ancient rain forests – an hour from the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy the mild winters, back and cross country skiing, heli-skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, indoor and outdoor skating, ice-fishing and an in the evening you can soak in the local hot springs. In the summer, go golfing, hiking, mountain biking, camping, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, boating and swimming in the pristine lakes and of course, go fishing in the Skeena and tributaries for world-renowned salmon and steelhead while keeping an eye out for the rare Kermode or “Spirit Bear”. The general pediatric office is in close proximity to the Mills Memorial Hospital. The pediatrician will join a group of wonderful colleagues and would be responsible for office work and hospital on call (1 in 4). Terrace is the referral centre for the NW central corridor, the Hazeltons, the Bulkley Valley in the Northwest Region. Hospital duties will include consultation to the emergency department, care of pediatric inpatients, high-risk stabilization, and care of newborns prior to transfer to larger centers if indicated. Teaching to family practice residents and 3rd and 4th year medical students will be expected periodically. Call includes taking phone calls from neighboring communities, stabilizing newborns before transport – we aim for above 34 weeks, stabilizing complex pediatric patients before transport, and managing stable inpatients. Mills Memorial Hospital currently does not have designated pediatric beds or a NICU. Terrace is a vibrant, entrepreneurial and friendly community with tertiary catchment area of 51000 people, clean air, affordable living and real-estate. Historically serving and sustained by the forestry industry, Terrace has grown into a regional service centre with government, educational and social services as biggest employers as well as a strong presence of construction, trades, and transportation infrastructure and growth in the manufacturing and tourism industries. The recent LNG Canada final investment decision, the largest energy investment in Canadian history, along with a number of other industrial projects will further develop and strengthen the region’s economy. Educational opportunities abound with three secondary and seven elementary schools, one French Immersion, one Francophone School and one long-distance education school, a Coast Mountain College and a University of British Columbia satellite campus. |
