Pediatric Urologist – Faculty position

The Division of Urology at The Hospital for Sick Children (Sickkids) is globally known for its ground-breaking contributions to patient care, research and education in the field of pediatric urology. We are inviting applications for a full-time pediatric urologist with a negotiable start date between Summer and late Fall 2020.

Dedicated exclusively to children and their families, SickKids is a world-renowned state of the art quaternary pediatric hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto. The hospital is committed to ongoing excellence in clinical care, research, learning and development, quality and safety, in addition to ensuring a caring and supportive work environment that enables family centred care. The Division of Urology has 3 full-time and 1 part-time pediatric urologists, a medical urologist, 2 full-time nurse practitioners and 1 registered nurse. Our Division provides care for neonates, children, and adolescents with a wide range of urological conditions including congenital abnormalities of the kidneys and urinary tract, hypospadias, undescended testicles and urolithiasis, but also rare conditions with high levels of complexity such as bladder exstrophy, cloacal anomalies, uro-oncology, disorders of sexual differentiation and renal transplantation (over 20 transplants per year). Approximately 90% of our patients come from the Great Toronto Area, serving a highly diverse and multicultural community of 6.9 million people (1.7 million under 19), while the remaining 10% consists of patients from Ontario, the rest of Canada and abroad.

Pediatric Urology is an everchanging specialty with evolving needs. In keeping with SickKids’ history of innovation and advancing global paediatric health, our Division is seeking a pediatric urologist with focused interest on reconstructive surgery and transitional urology. The successful candidate is expected to provide the highest quality of care in gender reassignment procedures (post transition to adult care in partnership with University of Toronto Division of Urology), complex pediatric reconstructive surgery (bladder augmentation, neobladder creation, traumatic bladder and urethral injury, neo-phalloplasty and female genitalia reconstruction), lead the Transitional Care Program with our partner institutions and actively participate in renal transplantation. The candidate is also expected to develop and advance their individual research interests while also taking initiative to drive a collective research endeavour such as prospective outcomes research and continue to build upon our culture of quality and safety.

The successful candidate should also demonstrate exceptional skills that fulfill the CanMEDS framework (Medical Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Leader, Health Advocate and Scholar), have a proven track record in research, have an interest in innovation and commit to ensuring top quality education for fellows, residents, medical students and interprofessional trainees. The successful candidate must hold an MD degree, have sub-specialty training in pediatric urology awarded by an accredited training program, have additional training in adolescent and adult reconstructive urology, be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario, and fulfill the requirements for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Toronto. Candidates must obtain an appropriate work visa, if applicable. The candidate must be proficient in English.

SickKids, located at 555 University Avenue in downtown Toronto, is among the largest children’s hospitals in North America and has a long history of excellence in clinical care, research and education. SickKids is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and is located adjacent to the University campus and to numerous specialty hospitals. It is an exciting time at SickKids as we execute our campus redevelopment project, including a new state-of-the-art acute care hospital tower. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to leverage multidisciplinary, clinical and basic science facilities that are available on the Hospital campus, including the 21-story Research Institute, and the University of Toronto’s Department of Surgery.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience, we are offering a compensation package that is competitive within North America, 70% of $357K for the first three years with a gradual increase to 100%. The Urology program is funded through an Alternate Funding Plan arrangement with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MoHLTC). This arrangement values academic contributions and protected time for research, education and other creative professional activities. Support for relocation expenses will be offered.

Toronto is a vibrant and multicultural city, having been named the 2nd most diverse city in the world by the UN, with over 51% of its residents born outside of Canada and home to over 230 ethnic groups, which is reflected in the city’s neighbourhood food scene and talents in key sectors like life science, finance, information and communications technology. It is currently the fourth largest city in North America and boasts a safe, livable, downtown area with excellent housing, schools and university access. It is consistently ranked as a top travel spot and internationally ranked as one of the world’s most livable cities. World famous lake and wilderness country and year-round outdoor recreation are easily accessible, as are two hub airports for regional or international travel.
