The University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) is currently recruiting for an Adult Psychiatrist. UHNBC is a university teaching hospital and is the regional referral center for Northern BC. It is also affiliated with the Northern Medical Program of the University of British Columbia. It covers a geographical area of approximately 600,000 km and services the immediate population of Prince George (approximately 80,000) and the regional population of approximately 350,000 people. The Department of Psychiatry consists of 12 adult psychiatrists and 1 child psychiatrist. The In-Patient Psychiatric Unit has 20 ward beds, six in-patient beds on the Adolescent Unit, and four seclusion rooms. The Emergency Department has two seclusion rooms. Department of Psychiatry members also provide out-patient services to the community interprofessional teams and specialized mental health and substance use teams. There is also some community contracted services including Intersect, the Foundry, the BC Cancer Center for the North, and a six bed detoxification unit. The successful applicant will be fully involved in teaching medical students, family practice residents and psychiatry residents from the University of British Columbia Medical Program. The successful applicant can establish their own private practice as consultations are abundant. The annual income is derived from a number of different sources including: fee-for-service (approximately $350,000), sessional contracts ($598.32 per 3-hour session), Medical On-Call Availability Program ($165,000 prorated amongst Department members over the year), rural retention flat fee ($12,668), rural retention premium (12%) and teaching. In addition, there is a generous CME allowance over and above that provided by Doctors of BC. On-call coverage is 1:5. Physicians practicing psychiatry in Prince George are eligible for a retention premium of 12% (approximately $44,100 per year), and a yearly rural retention flat fee of $12, 668, in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA). In addition, this position is eligible to receive a $15, 000 recruitment incentive and $9,000 – $12,000 relocation package, both in exchange for a 1-year return of service. Known as British Columbia’s northern capital (the 4th largest in British Columbia) Prince George is located at the approximate geographic center of the province where the Nechako and Fraser Rivers meet. In order to be eligible for licensure in BC, your postgraduate training must meet the requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Post graduate training must be obtained from an accredited and approved training program in a jurisdiction sanctioned by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
