Associate / Full Professor – Associate Psychiatrist-in-Chief

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is recruiting an Associate Psychiatrist in Chief, Department of Psychiatry, to play a leadership role in the ambitious change agenda of both the Department of Psychiatry and the hospital. This position is held for five years, renewable once, based upon a successful review. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2018.

Working in partnership with the Chief of Psychiatry and with the Executive Director for the Brain and Mental Health Program, the Associate Chief will participate in the hospital’s major planning and transformation processes (e.g. strategic planning and Project Horizon) and assist in the management and administration of the department. The Associate Chief will be accountable for the oversight of the daily clinical activities of the Department inclusive of those that interface with other hospital services (e.g. Emergency Department etc), and have oversight and responsibility for psychiatric staff/resource deployment, standards of practice and performance and change management priorities (e.g. EPIC). The Associate Chief will contribute to a revitalized culture focused on measurable quality and performance, and will also work with the Chief on Foundation initiatives to garner philanthropic support.

The Associate Chief will also participate in community related initiatives inclusive of support and strategic planning to the SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health, a community mental health agency newly integrated with SickKids. Other important SickKids initiatives that will require input from the Associate Chief include collaboration with other hospitals and community mental health agencies.

The Associate Chief will ensure that all patients assigned to the care of the department receive excellent patient-centred care at all times. The Associate Chief will prepare terms of reference and privileges for all staff members assigned to the department, and will ensure that all students, residents and other learners receive an excellent educational experience while at SickKids.

The position of Associate Chief comes with an appointment as the SickKids Chair in Child and Youth Medical Psychiatry at The Hospital for Sick Children. This is a Hospital-University Named Chair and is tied to a leadership position as Director of Child, Youth, and Family Health, Medical Psychiatry Alliance. Both the Associate Chief and the Chair positions are held for five years, renewable once, based upon a successful review.

The successful candidate will hold an MD degree, be eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Psychiatry, and have or be eligible for licensure in Ontario. The candidate should also be eligible for a senior academic position (Associate/Full Professor) in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Financial compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Associate Chief will be an outstanding physician, administrator and educator or clinician-scientist, with demonstrated leadership abilities, strong interpersonal, collaborative and change management skills as well as an international record of scholarship.
