The Sunshine Coast of BC, long touted as a 180 KM stretch of paradise, gains its rich heritage from the original inhabitants – the Coast Salish people. It is a contemporary hub that balances abundant, natural beauty and a surplus of adventure with growing industry sectors in technology, retail, and tourism. Located just a 40-minute ferry away from Vancouver, “The Coast” also counts on forestry, cultural arts, and fishing to support the area. Pender Harbour itself is an intricate amalgam of bays and coves that encroach inland for five kilometers and provide over 60 kilometers of shoreline. Once a vibrant shíshálh village site, steamer stop, a fishing village, and an important logging and medical waypoint, it is now home to a population of just under 3,000 permanent residents and another 3,000 seasonal residents.

Who is the Pender Harbour Health Centre?

The Pender Harbour Health Centre (PHHC) is a nonprofit society governed by community members, and completely dedicated to the health and wellness needs of our Pender Harbour neighbours. This Community Health Centre began 46 years ago, to meet the health care delivery needs of this small and remote community. A key benefit is that this Community Health model allows families, neighbours and friends to gain familiarity and camaraderie with their health care providers to improve physical, emotional and mental well-being for all. It’s part of the social safety net in this small community.

Under a multi-disciplinary model of care, team members give input on operational issues and most decisions are team-based. Patients experience friendly and welcoming care by the close-knit healthcare team. The staff and medical professionals at PHHC are dedicated to the centre, the patients and the community. The community determines the direction and culture of the organization through a volunteer board of directors and through membership.

What Will the Family Physician Undertake?

Building a healthy community is at the heart of this role. Working with a multidisciplinary team that includes a nursing clinic, social worker, dietician, diabetes and chronic disease management programs, chiropractic, dentists, mental health, women’s and youth sexual health clinics, and other supportive and preventive programs, the General Practitioners can elect to work fee for service or under contract. PHHC physician spaces have state of the art equipment to support their family practice. Located about 30 minutes from the local hospital in Sechelt, BC, each physician will assume a patient panel of 900. There is a current wait list of 400 patients. Our last physician had a full practice within the first month of arrival.
