Division Head – Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology, Department of Paediatrics

Effective January 1, 2023, the Division of Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology is seeking a full-time permanent faculty position as Head, Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology, Department of Paediatrics, at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), 555 University Ave., Toronto, ON which is an academic health science centre dedicated to the care of children: affiliated with the University of Toronto.

Over the years, our faculty within Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology, has created combined programs and teaching to deal with more complex issues of dysregulated immunity, and its clinical consequences. The cumulative expertise of these medical specialties will form the creation of a new Division for the Department of Paediatrics.

The Division offers internationally famous, comprehensive and accredited subspecialty residency programs. Trainees have come from all over Canada, and the world to pursue fellowships, with a strong clinical foundation as well as clinical translational, and basic research. Subspecialty advanced fellowships attract physicians, globally, for special training in immunodeficiency, lupus, vasculitis, autoinflammatory diseases, and dermatomyositis.

The Divisional clinical care programs encompass diagnosis and treatment of disorders of dysregulated immunity, with specialized clinics/programs for complex allergic diseases, oral immunotherapy, primary immune deficiencies spanning from newborn screening to post stem cell transplantation, childhood SLE, neonatal lupus, dermatomyositis, systemic juvenile arthritis, primary vasculitis, spondyloarthropathies, localized scleroderma, autoinflammatory diseases, as well as overlap syndromes in the fields of Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology.

Dedicated to supporting the growing diversification and spectrum of specialized clinical services, this role also provides unique opportunities for creative and professional activities and innovative translational and basic research across a spectrum of disorders. Our new division will be home to world-leading researchers in the field of dysregulated immunity. Scientists in the division are supported by several endowed chairs and millions of dollars in publicly funded grants. Globally important research programs in inherited immunodeficiencies, allergy, autoinflammation, Kawasaki Disease and systemic lupus erythematosus, have been established over many years. The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Research Program has received generous philanthropic support and is an institutional priority in clinical and translational research.

The successful candidate will act as a key steward and mentor for our diverse faculty and trainees, be a key collaborator with our allied health and nursing partners, and an innovative partner to our scientists in our world-class Research Institute. By championing clinical services, education, and research discoveries, you will advance the interaction of childhood allergy, immunology, and rheumatology in the care of disorders of dysregulated immunity. The candidate will play a key strategic role to ensure the alignment of academic activities to the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

The successful applicant will hold a leadership role and will possess mentoring experience with a track record of academic and research excellence in the field of Immunology or Allergy or Rheumatology. The applicant will demonstrate vision for child and youth health and future vision regarding maximizing the potential of the combined Division.

The successful candidate must be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto. Rank and salary ($250,000 to $350,000) per annum will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be eligible for a benefit package which includes medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability insurance, group insurance, pension plan, vision care, academic allowance, and a relocation package.

All candidates must be able to function proficiently in English, hold an MD, MBBS, or equivalent, and be certified or eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or have comparable qualifications. Candidates must hold, or be eligible for, licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
