Horizon Health Network, Saint John Area (Region 2), is actively seeking a permanent full-time Academic Emergency Medicine Physician, with a leadership role as Communications Director. Successful candidates will be expected to work clinically in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Saint John Area and will also secure an appointment with Dalhousie University, participating in research, educational, and CPD programs, with opportunities to teach at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick.

JOB DUTIES:
The following outlines the basic responsibilities. Additional duties may be assigned from time to time as may be necessary to the operation of Horizon Health Network:
• Participate in clinical care and on-call responsibilities as defined by your department.
• Participate in deliverables as outlined in the Emergency Medicine Academic Funding Plan.
• Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values and strategic directions.
• Provide leadership to the Department as the Emergency Medicine Saint John (EMSJ) Communications Director (see below).

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR ROLE:

The Emergency Medicine Saint John (EMSJ) Communications Director provides a pivotal role in supporting the Department of Emergency Medicine. As website editor in chief, they are responsible for developing and maintaining the content of our departmental website (https://sjrhem.ca/). Our website is closely aligned with our clinical practice and is a cornerstone in our continuous quality improvement activities through the posting of local clinical guidelines, and emergency medicine reflections. It is also a central hub of our academic programs fostering of our research, and medical education programs. Highlights include the grand rounds summaries, and the resident and medical student clinical e-pearls. Our clinical pearls have significant reach contributing to our average 800 unique page view per day.

The EMSJ Communications director is supported by and works with the EMSJ clinical and academic leads to collate, edit and create content for the SJRHEM website to ensure representation of all programs is both current and informative. The Editor has a clear vision for promoting the activities of the Department of Emergency Medicine and is committed to working within the team to provide an online resource for education and knowledge translation.

In addition, the Communications Director is responsible for promoting our academic activities via our social media platforms and internal communication forums.

• In general, a full-time equivalent position in emergency medicine is considered to be a total of 32 hours, comprising 29 hours clinical plus academic and clinical support time across the sites.

A nationally competitive Academic Funding Plan compensates Emergency Medicine physicians for clinical excellence, medical education, research and administration. The successful applicant will be compensated at an hourly rate for their clinical shifts and general contribution to the department and are eligible to receive additional funding for specific academic and administrative projects.

Qualification Requirements
Education
QUALIFICATIONS (General):
 A medical degree is required.
 Certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Emergency Medicine; or College of Family Physicians of Canada - Emergency Medicine, ABEM, FRCEM, or equivalent.
 Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.
 Candidates must be eligible for an academic appointment from Dalhousie University.
 Current certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Life Support (PALS) or Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS)
 Competency in Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) and Emergency Airway Management is required.
 Proficiency in English is required. Bilingual skills would be considered an asset.
 In accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada.
 Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.
 Good attendance and work record.
 Physically able to perform assigned duties.
 Willingness to travel to and from all area hospitals as required.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR ROLE:

The successful candidate will be tech savvy, academic physician with a broad knowledge of website design principles including basic html editing, page structure and managing links and image manipulation. They will demonstrate excellent communication skills and have experience with academic writing and publications. Experience with WordPress website design is an advantage; however, training can be provided if necessary.
