Job Posting
full time Family Practice at Stikine Health Centre
Dease Lake, British Columbia
Job ID: 16962

In collaboration with the Tahltan First Nations, Northern Health is seeking a Family Physician to join the Medical Staff based in Dease Lake, British Columbia. The selected candidate will join 3 other Family Physicians, and together they will provide 3.0 FTE service (0.75 FTE per physician). There will always be 2 physicians on site. The close knit health care team also includes 2-3 registered nurses as well as a full time combined lab / X-Ray technician. There are currently two physician houses provided by Northern Health for the selected candidate to share with the other family physicians.

As part of the service contract, physicians will provide outreach services to Telegraph Creek (2 days per week) and Iskut (1 day per week). The Family Physicians will participate in multidisciplinary team planning as well as Health Forums with patients for issues such as cancer prevention and chronic diseases prevention and management.

The Stikine Health Centre is a designated diagnostic and treatment centre located in Dease Lake, one of the most remote communities in Northern BC. With the closest hospital approximately 600 km south in Terrace, BC the Stikine Health Centre provides family medicine and emergency services to a large area of northern British Columbia. The health centre is equipped with a single bed resuscitation room, high quality bedside ultrasonography, X-Ray, ECG and limited point of care in house lab testing. The clinic averages about 1200 ER visits per year and services a population of about 2000 people including Dease Lake, Iskut, Telegraph Creek and surrounding areas. This number increases during the summer months due to outlying mining camps and tourists passing through to the Yukon and Alaska.

The Stikine region is one of the most spectacular pristine wilderness areas remaining virtually untamed. This region encompasses an area of 153,600 sq. km. and is the home of the Stikine River, one of the last free-flowing wilderness rivers in North America. The selected candidate will enjoy the weekly drive to Telegraph Creek – coined the ‘Grand Canyon’ of the north. You will regularly see mountain goat, moose, bears, bobcat, lynx and wolf on this drive.

Dease Lake was originally a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post, established in 1837 by Robert Campbell. Remains of the old Hudson Bay post still stand at the south end of the Dease Lake.

Today, Dease Lake (population 400) offers full services for travelers, as well as guide/outfitting, boat, canoe and ATV rentals, and helicopter tours. Dease Lake is known for its massive Lake Trout and Arctic Grayling. Northern Pike and Rainbow Trout can also be caught in abundance here. You can easily be on call while enjoying some of the best fishing in the province.

Known as Tatl’ah or “Head of the Lake” by the Tahltan First Nation, the community is primarily of Tahltan decent and thrives on a rich history and culture.

This job would be the perfect fit for someone that enjoys remote family physician and wants to join a strong, collaborative and supportive health care team
