The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group is a 628-bed, academic health science centre, providing leadership in clinical, educational and research activities in the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).

The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (ROHCG), a fully affiliated teaching site for the University of Ottawa, is seeking Family Physicians with training or a special interest in addiction medicine. This academic center provides clinical service, teaching and research opportunities.

The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Center is seeking to recruit a Family Physician with exemplary credentials, and a demonstrated proficiency in working collegially and respectfully within medical and multidisciplinary teams. There is opportunity for active teaching and research, and the anticipation of participation in the administrative functioning of the hospital, either through committee work or leadership opportunities. Specifically, The Royal’s Substance Use and Concurrent Disorders (SUCD) Program provides specialized care to individuals with complex substance use disorders, moderate to severe mental health disorders, complicated physical health issues, and psychosocial vulnerabilities.

The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group is composed of a 3 campuses located in Eastern Ontario and is comprised of:
• A 190-bed state-of-the-art mental health facility and one 96-bed facility (32 recovery beds and 64 long-term care beds) located in Ottawa, and;
• The Brockville Mental Health Centre which is a specialized mental health facility located in Brockville, has 161 inpatient beds (61 Forensic Treatment Unit, 100 Secure Treatment Unit) and 183 beds in the community (Homes for Special Care);
• A campus at Carlingwood which houses the Community Mental Health Program, with additional community related clinics around the region, i.e. Prompt Clinic;
• Two satellite facilities, one in Arnprior and one in Kingston for the Operational Stress Injuries (OSI) Program. These facilities provide care for clients of Veteran Affairs Canada (VAC) and eligible members of the Canadian Forces (CF) and RCMP who have an OSI, and to their families.

The SUCD program has multiple services including medical withdrawal and stabilization inpatient unit (12 beds), concurrent disorders unit: residential (12 beds) and day treatment, transitional aged youth service (TAY), regional opioid intervention service (ROIS), rapid access addiction medicine clinic (RAAM), outreach, and an early intervention program in schools. Services are tailored to the unique needs of the individuals and communities we serve in Eastern Ontario and beyond. Addiction Medicine Physicians work as a member of dedicated and enthusiastic interdisciplinary teams that also include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, addiction counsellors, dietician, and recreation therapist. We are a busy program with innovative services. Our physicians are actively involved in teaching medical students and residents. Program evaluation is integrated into service delivery and we have an established program of research.

Candidates should be knowledgeable and comfortable with a harm reduction, evidence based, trauma informed, motivational communication approach to substance use disorders. Responsibilities would include the provision of direct clinical services to patients with a willingness to rotate between various services within SUCD, teaching, and possible involvement in program evaluation/research. Skills required would include assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning (substance use disorders; common mental health disorders, physical health issues), management of withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids, provision of opioid agonist therapy, and prescribing of anti-craving and psychotropic medication. Opportunities may be available to provide medical services to other departments within the Royal if interested.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with individuals with substance use and concurrent disorder. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop areas of specific interest within addiction medicine including academic presentations and research opportunities. Interested applicants should be excited about participating in the education of medical students and residents. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing is essential. Bilingualism is an asset but not required.

The successful candidate will possess:
• Current CPSO licensure and CMPA
• Demonstrated medical/clinical leadership skills, a completed working knowledge of psychopharmacology and experience in mental health service delivery to a broad-based individual and multi-cultural patient population
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Bilingualism preferred.

The successful candidate:
• Must have completed an accredited residency training program in family medicine. Preference will be given to those with a Fellowship in Addiction Medicine, or those with a Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) in addiction medicine or who are certificants with CSAM or ISAM or a diplomat of ABAM.
• New graduates are encouraged to apply, would be provided with training/mentorship and would be expected to work towards certification.
