Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael’s Hospital is now recruiting academic emergency permanent full-time academic emergency physicians to join our Emergency Department (ED) team in 2021. Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael’s Hospital is a tertiary care hospital, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, and a core training site for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program as well as many other Postgraduate and Fellowship Programs at the University of Toronto.

St. Michael’s Hospital is part of Unity Health Toronto, the network of Providence, St. Joseph’s and St. Michael’s Healthcare. St. Michael’s is a teaching and research hospital founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1892 to care for the sick and poor of Toronto’s inner city. Affectionately known as the Urban Angel, St. Michael’s is renowned for providing exceptional patient care. As downtown Toronto’s adult trauma centre, the hospital is a hub for neurosurgery, complex cardiac and cardiovascular care, therapeutic endoscopy, minimally invasive surgery and care of the homeless and disadvantaged. St. Michael’s is also one of the province’s major sites of care for critically ill patients. Fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s provides outstanding medical education to health-care professionals in more than 23 academic disciplines. Home to the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, made up of the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre, the hospital integrates researchers, educators and clinicians to advance patient care.

The St. Michael’s Hospital Emergency Department has a strong academic (research, education, quality improvement and innovation) with a focus on care of those experiencing disadvantage and homelessness, education research, QI, design methodology and trauma care. Over 45% of visits to Toronto emergency departments by people experiencing homelessness were to St. Michael’s Hospital. Our ED sees over 80,000 patients annually with over 1000 trauma team activations each year.

We are a collegial and innovative group of about 40 physicians, with a reputation for academic success and clinical excellence. We are looking to recruit strong academic clinicians for July 1, 2021 (exact start date negotiable). We are interested in candidates seeking academic job descriptions of: Clinician Scientist, Clinician Educator, Clinician Administrator, Clinician in Quality and Innovation, Clinician Investigator, or Clinician Teacher.

Duties during your Emergency Department shifts will include the clinical care of patients, supervision and bedside teaching of trainees, as well as responding to the paramedic patch phone as needed. Outside of your clinical shifts you will be expedited to contribute to the academic priorities of the University through research, education, administration, and/or quality improvement as relevant to your academic job description.

If you are a FRCPC, CCFP-EM or DABEM certified in Emergency Medicine, and hold an MD or equivalent, and an graduate degree to support your academic career, are able to function proficiently in English, are eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, have strong clinical and teaching skills and wanting to join Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael’s Hospital faculty with the goal of developing or continuing a career that contributes to both the University of Toronto and Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael’s Hospital, please contact us.
