Details: The Department of Internal Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, and Shared Health Manitoba invite applications for the position of Head of the Section of General Internal Medicine, one of 17 sections in the Department of Internal Medicine providing patient care, undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education and research. The successful applicant, based at Health Sciences Centre, will also have a leading role in the health care delivery system of General Internal Medicine services in Winnipeg and Manitoba. The 54 faculty members form a section that oversees the major in-patient and out-patient clinical care services at the three teaching hospitals in Winnipeg. Section physicians provide clinical attending services on 6 Clinical Teaching Units, in-patient Consult Services, and numerous ambulatory care clinics at Winnipeg’s tertiary care centres and community hospitals. The section includes a large research database which holds extensive information on 300,000 consecutive admissions to the General Internal Medicine and Critical Care units. The database is supported by data collection nurses, an industrial engineer, a database manager and a dedicated statistician. Applicants with a proven track record in health systems research would also be considered for the Department’s endowed Chair in Health Services Design and Quality Improvement. This endowed chair was created to advance innovation in the function and design of medical services, with the aim to improving the effectiveness and safety of patient care. Qualifications: Candidates must have senior specialty qualifications in General Internal Medicine in the country of current practice and must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. Certification in General Internal Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is preferred. The successful applicant will be an academic internist with proven leadership abilities, including a proven record of research, a demonstrated capacity to collaborate with related disciplines, and demonstrated clinical excellence. They must also have clinical and teaching skills to further the aims of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in general internal medicine. The applicant will have an important role in creating a research program by adding clinical research expertise and by enhancing existing clinical programs. This is a geographic full-time, contingent position commencing January 1, 2020 or as soon thereafter as possible, for a term of five years, renewable upon favourable review. Compensation: Salary and rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
