Chief – Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine

The Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children is recognised internationally for its contributions to advancing clinical care, education and research in the field of pediatric anesthesiology. We are inviting applications for the position of Chief of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (a full-time position) with a negotiable start date between Spring and late Fall 2020.
Dedicated exclusively to children and their families, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is a world-renowned state of the art pediatric health care facility affiliated with the University of Toronto. The hospital is committed to ongoing excellence in clinical care, research, learning and development, quality and safety, in addition to ensuring a caring and supportive work environment that enables family centred care. The Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine is comprised of 42 anesthesiologists and provides care for neonates, children, and adolescents.

Responsibilities of the Chief role include ensuring provision of the highest quality pediatric anesthesia services, including acute, transitional and chronic pain, and sedation. The Chief should promote not only individual research interests of faculty but also take initiative to drive a collective research endeavour such as prospective outcomes research. Ensuring top quality education for fellows, residents, medical students and interprofessional trainees together with faculty coordinators is essential. The successful candidate will be expected to continue to build upon a culture of quality and safety. We are seeking an individual with exceptional leadership skills (e.g. communication, collaboration, management, mentoring), the ability to create a unified innovative vision for the Department and align Departmental activities with the mission of the Department of Perioperative Services and the SickKids organisation.

The Department seeks an outstanding academic individual with proven strong administrative and leadership skills, in particular with experience and knowledge regarding recruitment of academic physicians. Also required are a record of peer-reviewed research, and leadership in undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, continuing medical education or patient education. The Chief will be responsible for clinical and academic matters within the Department and will foster excellence in patient care services.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree and must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Anesthesia, eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario and must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, University of Toronto. Candidates must obtain an appropriate visa if applicable.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to leverage multidisciplinary, clinical and basic science facilities that are available on the Hospital campus, including the 21-story Research Institute, and the University of Toronto’s Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.
SickKids, located at 555 University Avenue in downtown Toronto, is among the largest children’s hospitals in North America and has a long history of excellence in clinical care, research and education. SickKids is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and is located adjacent to the University campus and to numerous specialty hospitals. It is an exciting time at SickKids as we execute our campus redevelopment project, including a new state-of-the-art acute care hospital tower.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience, we are offering a compensation package that is competitive within North America. The package combines base compensation funded through the Alternate Funding Plan arrangement with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MoHLTC) with additional partial fee-for-service funds. This arrangement values academic contributions and protected time for research, education and other creative professional activities. A per annum stipend, in recognition of the administrative leadership responsibilities associated with the Department Chief role, will be provided. Support for relocation expenses will be offered. The position has the potential duration of two terms of five years each.
