Mental Health and Addiction Program Overview at St. Joseph’s Health Centre

St. Joseph’s Department of Psychiatry is a comprehensive program providing services spanning the life cycle. In addition, addiction services at SJHC are grouped with mental health to create a Mental Health and Addictions Program. The department has a 36 bed adult inpatient unit including a 6 bed psychiatric intensive care unit; a 6 bed adult short stay unit; an 8 bed Child and Adolescent inpatient unit (for a total of 50 beds) and an adult day hospital. Ambulatory services are organized into a unique open access system which enables the emergency department, inpatient units and consultation liaison service to electronically book patient’s for consultation in real-time and reduce wait time for follow-up. In addition, our ambulatory services include a concurrent disorder service, and a geriatric psychiatry service. Addiction services include community residential withdrawal management, emergency addiction crisis workers, addiction medicine consultation-liaison service, addiction medicine physicians, the Toronto Centre for Substance Use in Pregnancy and an extensive harm reduction program.

The St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Department of Psychiatry currently has openings for Psychiatrists licensed to practice in the Province of Ontario.

• 1 Full-time Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist

The St. Joseph’s Health Center Department of psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program includes 6-8 bed Inpatient Unit, Day Hospital Program providing for up to 8 students, a Consultation-Liaison Service supporting the Pediatric Program, an active Emergency Psychiatry Service, and an Urgent Care Service. There is a hospital commitment to expand the capacity of the Child and Mental Health Program, and as such, a desire to provide additional community consultations as well as other cost effective programming. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health inpatient service provides care to a high needs population in the West End of Toronto and tends to be a fast-paced unit caring for patients with complex needs. The unit is intended to work within an inter-professional care model in order to best meet the multifaceted needs of the admitted patients.

The full-time position available involves a blend of inpatient and outpatient service. The successful candidate will be responsible for up to 3 admitted inpatients as well as provide day coverage when one of the other inpatient psychiatrists is away. The psychiatrist is expected to attend daily morning rounds and work collaboratively on our multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will remain involved in their patients’ treatment post-discharge until their care is established in the community. The psychiatrist is expected to attend brief weekly day hospital rounds and to monitor the clinical progress of their referred day hospital patients. Participation is also expected at bi-weekly unit meetings with agendas ranging from hospital announcements, case reviews, or educational seminars. Urgent Care is an active part of our program, for those who present to the Emergency Department and need close outpatient follow-up. The successful candidate will also participate in the Urgent Care Clinic, which provides timely psychiatric care for those with acute but non-emergent mental health symptoms. As we are an attractive training site of Child and Adolescent subspecialty trainees, we are also privileged to have high caliber residents, who are assigned to available psychiatrists. The successful candidate would also be expected to supervise residents and participate in department-wide educational forums.

Applicants must hold an MD, and be certified or eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Candidates should be eligible for an academic appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto. The candidate must be able to function proficiently in English.

As St. Joseph’s Health Centre is a community teaching hospital, we encourage psychiatrists to get involved in teaching residents and resident group seminars, which take place throughout the year.

Compensation will depend on the amount of clinical work performed (estimate based on fee-for-service billings and other sources of remuneration) and will be in the usual range for an Academically affiliated Child Psychiatrist in the Province of Ontario at approximately $250K to 350K per annum.
